MÉRIDA, Yucatán, September 23, 2025. —
After gaining international recognition at major festivals such as the 2025 New York Latino Film Festival, Yucatecan filmmaker Luis Quijano will present a special showcase of five short films that highlight his powerful storytelling within the horror and fantasy genres. The event will take place on Wednesday, September 24 at 7:00 p.m. at the Mayamax Hall of the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya.
The program features:
Caminante, caminante: La leyenda del huay chivo — the story of two young missionaries in a Yucatecan village whose attempt to convert the community challenges local beliefs and awakens a monster from ancestral legend. Caviar Star — about a Brazilian actress preparing for an audition in Los Angeles who becomes haunted by the vengeful spirit of another actress, triggering a struggle between possession and obsession. All the Things — an intimate story of a man who packs his entire life into a suitcase. AVEM — exploring migration through the journey of a young man who undergoes a bodily transformation while longing for freedom. A Banana Boat commercial, completing the selection.
Audiences will also get a first look at Quijano’s upcoming feature film, Me gusta más crudo, which follows Fernando and Andrea, a cannibal couple whose twisted rituals of desire and control escalate when they capture two new victims.
The evening will include a red carpet, a Q&A with the filmmaker, and a closing cocktail reception, organized by the Universidad de las Artes de Yucatán (UNAY) with support from the Secretaría de la Cultura y las Artes, Patronato Cultur, the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya, the Yucatán Symphony Orchestra and its Patronato, and Dinercap.
Born in Mérida, Luis Quijano has directed and produced numerous projects in Mexico and the United States, earning awards and grants for his work. Through his production company, Balché Films, he has focused on exploring the complexity of human nature through horror and fantasy narratives.
"Presenting my work in Mérida is like returning to my roots. I want to encourage young people not to give up, to set goals and pursue them with determination. Filmmaking is a difficult path, but with perseverance it is possible," said Quijano.
