"On December 4th, the short film 'Caminante, Caminante,' directed by Luis Quijano, will premiere. He portrays one of the most deeply rooted legends in Yucatán: the Huay Chivo. In an interview with 'La Jornada Maya,' the director discusses his work and the importance of preserving legends and myths in the current era. The short film will be screened this Wednesday at 7:30 PM at Salamayamax in the Museum of the Maya World, with free admission.
Luis Quijano explains that the idea for the short film originated in 2013 when he went on missions, as he does every Easter, to communities in the interior of the state. The residents shared this legend with him, and the story lingered in his mind for some time, leading him to capture it in audiovisual form. Without revealing too much about why he wants people to see it on the screen, he details that, drawing from his experience, he created a story in which two Yucatecan missionaries visit a Yucatán town. The locals tell them the legend, cautioning them to show respect or face consequences. It is then that the two women have an encounter with this mythical being.
The suspenseful short film revolves around the power of faith and fear, and how both can be used to overcome challenges, he indicates. "I would like to gradually foster respect for these types of legends," he comments. For the filmmaker, it is important to depict these legends so that the new generations, especially those living in the capital, become acquainted with them. He believes these legends are fading with time and are only actively recounted in the communities of the state.
The artist revealed that this is one of the first works he plans to create about other Yucatán legends, hoping that this short film serves as support for financing his other projects. Among them, he discloses that he will make a feature film about the same character, the Huay Chivo."
