Luis Quijano Returns to Mérida with His Horror and Fantasy Cinema
The Yucatecan filmmaker will present on September 24 at the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya a selection of five short films and a teaser of his upcoming feature, showcasing stories that explore human complexity through his unique genre-driven storytelling.
After gaining international recognition with screenings at major forums and festivals such as the 2025 New York Latino Film Festival, Yucatecan filmmaker Luis Quijano will present in the Mayamax Hall of the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya a selection of five short films that highlight his ability to tell profound and impactful stories within genre cinema.
The showcase, scheduled for Wednesday, September 24 at 7:00 p.m., includes titles such as “Caminante, caminante: La leyenda del huay chivo,” which tells the story of a village in Yucatán where two young missionaries, in their effort to convert the community, defy local beliefs and awaken a monster from ancestral legend; and “Caviar Star,” about a young Brazilian actress preparing for an audition in Los Angeles who is haunted by the vengeful spirit of another actress, unleashing a battle between possession and obsession.
Also featured are “All the Things,” the story of a man packing his entire life into a suitcase; “AVEM,” which portrays migration through the experience of a young man undergoing a bodily transformation while yearning for freedom; and a commercial for Banana Boat that completes the program.
In addition, audiences will get a first look at the upcoming feature film “Me gusta más crudo,” which follows the cannibal couple Fernando and Andrea as they kidnap two new victims and turn their twisted ritual into a game of resistance, desire, and control—pushing the limits of how far they are willing to go to feed their passion.
The showcase is organized by the Universidad de las Artes de Yucatán (UNAY), in collaboration with the Secretaría de la Cultura y las Artes, Patronato Cultur, the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya, the Yucatán Symphony Orchestra, the Patronato for the Yucatán Symphony Orchestra, and Dinercap. The evening will include a red carpet entrance, a conversation with the filmmaker, and a closing cocktail reception.
